Dexys have produced some of favourite hidden gems, and Kevin Rowland has written some of the most gut wrenching and honest tunes that have ever been written, so, let me introduce you to their first album in about 20 years, the brilliantly named, 'One Day I'm Going To Soar'.
The album itself bleeds social paranoia and insecurity, which makes it fantastic for those who are in love, or have lost someone they love to someone else, or who are suffering from a midlife crisis. There are some absolutely epic moments in this album, including the heartbreaking and life affirming "Lost", and the awkwardly romantic "I'm thinking of you". Which includes the line, 'I'm thinking of you/without your clothes'. I mean come on, how honest can a love song get?
That's also another thing that Kevin Rowland seems to be good at, language. In this album he seems to be completely fearless, and this makes every emotion brought up in a song more poignant than the last. The song 'Incapable of Love', features a guest vocalist. This is the usual thing for a band like Dexy's to do right? Well, think again. In this song it seems like Kevin Rowland is having an argument with the female guest vocalist, who is posing as his girlfriend. At the start of the song he sounds extremely stubborn, then by the end of the song he gives in to the woman and admits that he is wrong, but it's too late by then.
And that's the thing, this album portrays raw emotions to the highest degree, and that is what makes this album so unbelievably good. One Day I'm Going To Soar is an absolute classic in my eyes, and a must listen for those who have experienced being in love with a person who doesn't love you back, social uncertainty, and feelings of confusion in their life.
